March Activities for the Computer Lab

March is a great time of year to plan holiday themed activities along with more serious academic content. Schools that don't have a break in March understand that it can feel like a really long stretch of weeks. Planning fun and engaging lessons can make the time go by much faster.

This either means that differentiation is provided to make the lesson appropriate for multiple grade levels, or it includes multiple grade levels of activities for the tech lab.

Kindergarten Computer Lab Activities for March

With kindergarten I almost always have a themed set of activities that work on both tech skills and academic content from their classroom. This makes it a lot easier to work on mouse and keyboard skills without them getting burned out by doing repetitive tasks. TECHademics is my favorite way to do this!

Timely Tech for March includes a similar set of skills as TECHademics, but is in a different program (Google Slides). This gives students an opportunity to keep working on mouse skills while bringing in other great skills like navigating to a file and within a file.
For a fun one-day activity for St. Patrick’s Day, Digital Pixel Art is perfect. Kindergarten students can do level 1, which is all drag and drop skills.

Digital Secret Picture Tile Puzzles are great drag and drop practice on any device. This set has students matching letters with different fonts. Use the St. Pat’s Day themed set during March for some engaging holiday activities.

First Grade Computer Lab Activities for March

First graders in March are working on Timely Tech as the main activity. I have them complete the slides for base 10, hundreds chart puzzles, and short and long vowel sounds.
The first way we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day is with digital hundreds chart mystery pictures. First grade students love these and can do 2-3 of the designs in a 30 minute class period.
This is a great time of year to bring in a science unit with coding robots. The Planets and Space task cards can be used with any moveable robot.
Check out these Amazon Recommendations to see my favorite robots for the classroom.

CVC Build and Type works on both drag and drop as well as basic keyboarding. Students build a CVC word on each line and then type it into the table. Try the St. Pat’s Day one in March.

Second Grade Computer Lab Activities for March

A fun activity for 2nd grade and up is spreadsheet mystery pictures. This set with a St. Patrick’s Day theme is perfect to split between a few grade levels. Students really master the toolbar in Sheets or Excel.
Another great option for March themed activities for 2nd grade is the March Timely Tech. Second grade can work on the slides for Decorate a clover, make new words, ABC order, and the typing prompts.

Presentation projects are a great opportunity for students to practice their software skills. Depending on experience, 2nd grade students could do level 1 or 2.

Third Grade Computer Lab Activities for March

The main activity for third grade is software lessons. These lessons can take anywhere from 10-45 minutes depending on the student, so it is always a good idea to have early finisher activities.

Spreadsheet mystery pictures make a great early finisher activity. Have students work on 2-3 of them over the course of the month. The St. Patrick’s Day theme is perfect for March in the computer lab.

My other favorite option for 3rd grade is Digital Pixel Art. Level 3 is usually right for third grade students, but you have 4 levels of challenge so you can choose or let them pick.

Fourth Grade Computer Lab Activities for March

Just like 3rd grade, 4th grade has software lessons as the main activity. The topic for all of the lessons is the Science of Color, which students love to learn about. It is a good idea to plan warm up and early finisher activities to go with these technology lessons.

Typing makes a great warm up for upper elementary students. In just about 10 minutes a week, students can maintain their typing skills.

Classroom teachers really appreciate when we practice content skills in the computer lab. Multiplication and Division Mystery Pictures with a March Theme make a great early finisher activity.

Fifth Grade Computer Lab Activities for March

Starting with the main activity for the month, 5th graders are working on their software skills.
Then they can work on Timely Tech with the slides for crossword puzzle, if/then/else coding, and code a GIF. These make great warm up or early finisher activities for the month.
Binary Code Digital Flash Cards are the perfect way to work on typing and coding skills together. I use them throughout the school year with upper elementary students. There are 120 words included so it takes students a while to get through.

There you have it, activities for grades k-5 for the month of March. Be sure to pin this blog post to get back to later!
